Equipment » 3D Prototyper

The 3-D rapid prototyper in the ITLL is an Objet 30. This machine uses an acrylic-like plastic to produce models using polyjet technology.  The machine has excellent resolution and builds relatively robust parts.  Assemblies with moving parts may also be built using a removable support material; therefore, multi-part systems do not  require assembly after rapid prototyping.

3D Prototyper

Prototypes produced with this machine are useful to obtain a physical model of a new design but are not usually the final product. However, depending on the application, prototyped parts may be used in the final assembly.

Costs and Colors

  • The acrylic-like plastic material costs $9 per cubic inch
  • The removable support material costs $4 per cubic inch
  • A typical prototype may cost $10-30
  • Colors available:  white

Steps to Use the Prototyper

  1. Save your part or assembly as a ".stl" file format.
  2. Check the large sign outside the prototyping room on the 2B level of the ITLL for further instructions.

Additional Notes

  • The maximum model size is 294 x 192 x 148 mm (11.5 x 7.5 x 5.8 inches).
  • Stereolithography (.stl) files are imported to Objet Studio software to create the toolpaths for the prototyper.
  • Use a 3-D CAD model from SolidWorks, or similar program, to create the .stl file required.
  • The material is VeroWhitePlus, and the data sheet for the material is found on Objet's website
