About Us

Program Summary

The Integrated Teaching and Learning (ITL) Program at CU-Boulder is a nationally recognized award-winning engineering education leader. The program supports hands-on engineering learning through an innovative environment where students integrate engineering theory with practice and learn through doing. Program components include a first-year design course, sophomore- and junior-level experimental hands-on learning courses, senior design projects and design expos.

The ITL Program is supported by the unique ITL Laboratory--a 34,000-sq. ft learning facility that provides students and educators with a flexible, visible learning environment. Its curriculum-driven design supports a variety of learning styles and features first-year design studios, an active learning center, a computer network integrating all experimental equipment throughout two large, open laboratory plazas, fabrication “shacks,” group work areas, and student-centered, highly accessible technology-rich electronics and manufacturing centers.

And, the ITL Laboratory was designed with the K-12 world in mind; thousands of K-12 students and teachers visit the ITL Laboratory annually to participate in hands-on, ears-on, and minds-on K-12 engineering camps, events and workshops. Each academic year, the ITL Program engages 1,800 K-12 students through in-class engineering instruction and afterschool engineering clubs in Lafayette- and Longmont-area schools. An additional two hundred elementary and high school girls and boys learn how they can turn their imaginations into reality during weeklong summer engineering workshops.

The ITL Program and Laboratory has received numerous awards including the prestigious 2008 Bernard M. Gordon Prize Award from the National Academy of Engineering.
